WhatIn the first part of the seminar (weeks 1-3), the goals and approaches of the entire semester are outlined, and literature of various genres and issues dealing with family, gender and sexuality in the Greek and Roman antiquity and early and mediaeval Christian traditions is reviewed. In the second part (weeks 4-6) we examine the rise of the question of reforming and civilising men and women in England during the Renaissance and the Reformation. In the third part (weeks 7-11), which constitutes the core of the seminar, we focus on the long eighteenth-century England and read topics related to gender and sexuality, and the relationship between the household and the nation. In the last part (weeks 12-15) we trace how the schemes of the eighteenth-century Enlightened historiography of civilisations were transformed in the ‘histories of sexuality’ and ‘women’s histories’ of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
